Coverage
Coverage comes into play during a hitting and a blocking
situation.
Covering player must first read the situation.
Covering the hit.
Is the
hitter looking to hit angle or line?
Hitting angle,
a blocked ball will most certainly be blocked to the inside of
the
hitter.
That is
where you must set up the coverage.
Is the set
a tight set or off the net?
The
potential to get slam blocked (roofed) is much greater when the block is
tight to
the net. In this case the ball will
most likely be coming straight down.
Cover
person must read this and get in close for the dig.
In both
cases, the cover person MUST be in a ready position.
Either
case, blocks happen quickly.
The key to
a successful dig off a block is NOT your reaction skills
rather
being in the right position.
What if the
set is off the net? How well can the
other team block?
To dig even
a soft block you need to position yourself inside the 3 meter
line, ready to dig.
Rarely is
the ball blocked directly behind the hitter.
Set up inside the hitter.
Who should
be reacting for coverage?
EVERY PLAYER ON THE COURT!!!!!
Specifically, the player closest to
the inside of the hitter should get in tight to
pick up the block, but every other
player on the court should draw in and be
in a ready, support position.
