Transition refers to the action of shifting from a defensive
position (ball on the other side of the net) into an attacking position. Likewise from an offensive positioning to a
defensive positioning. Like many other aspects
of volleyball, each position has a specific role and responsibility.
Come down from your block.
Immediately open into the court.
(Stay in a
crouched, ready position)
Sprint in straight line to your
mark. (Very important.)
Pick up where the ball is as you move
to your mark.
(Keep your head
up, find the ball.
Check on the pass to setter.
Check on the defensive.
(Where are they set up.)
(Hitting to an open spot is a better option
than just smashing the
ball.)
Lean into spike approach.
Gage the set, explode into approach
and extend your swing.
If your teammate receives set, move
into support position.
Offense to Defense
All three front row players move
immediately to the net.
Keep your hands high.
Follow the ball
Read the setters cues.
Outside player sets up outside
shoulder to middle of the ball.
(Outside Hitter side-shuffles to
ball, arm stay high.)
(At this stage of play most hitters
angle the ball cross court.
(We will work on taking
away the cross court shot.)
Once the set is made and opposing
hitter begins approach, attention is shifted from ball to hitter.
Proper transition requires two things:
Focus and Effort.
Block
Open in.
Straight to your mark.
(Pick up the ball as you go)
Check pass
Check defense.
Focus on set.
Kill the ball
Move straight to the net.
Keep your hands high.
Read the setters cues.
Outside block sets on middle of the
ball.
In block closes and sets.
Block goes up in unison.
